Inspiring Students to be Young Authors

This ongoing course offers a weekly online gathering on Zoom for students interested in crafting short stories in the form of chapters across diverse genres.

Classes are scheduled on Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m EST and Saturdays at 10 a.m. EST.

Each session is 40 minutes long with a maximum of 6 students per cohort. The primary objective is to cultivate a passion for writing while fostering a supportive community for students to exchange ideas. Each month we will explore a new genre.

Classes commence with a group discussion on the chosen genre, accompanied by a brief analysis of relevant examples drawn from various media forms, including films, books, television, and plays.

Structure of the First Few Weeks

Week 1:

We will introduce the most common elements of a narrative and analyze them in different text. Reading and analyzing ready written text, is my first strategy to teach writing.

Week 2:

We will explore different techniques of story starters used by authors. The story opening and first two pages matter. Sometimes, students know what they want to write about and can share all their ideas verbally. However, once they are asked to write this on paper, they get stuck. We will look together during our group meeting at the first paragraph in different chapter books. This will be followed by reflection questions. Then, we will play some games with story starters.

Week 3 and 4:

We will explore using conjunctions to expand sentences. We teach grammar and punctuation through writing. Punctuation lessons covered for these weeks will include quotation marks, comma, and ellipsis points. To help students expand their sentences in writing, we will also cover simple and complex sentences.

Week 5:

This will be a brainstorming session for all students. They will learn using a graphic organizer to plan their story. We will also discuss orally how to write the first paragraph of their story.
